You’ll find Norway’s richest petroglyph treasures just outside Fredrikstad
You will find many places near Fredrikstad and Hvaler with amazing stories from our Bronze Age ancestors. Østfold is the Norwegian county with the most petroglyphs, and Skjebergsletta outside Fredrikstad is the area with the most in Østfold. In this rich cultural landscape at the bottom of Skjebergkilen are over 100 engravings on islets and sloping mountain rocks.
The Ytre Hvaler National Park was set up to preserve a distinctive, large and relatively pristine area in southeast Norway with complete ecosystems on land and in the sea. Coral reefs, varied hard- and soft-bottom communities, stretches with currents and varying depths of water are important elements in the marine natural history.
We find much of the Norwegian light house history in the outer Oslo fjord basin. We also find examples of various types of lighthouses, from the coastal lighthouses Færder, Torbjørnskjær and Svenner to inlet lighthouses like Struten, Strømtangen, Homlungen and Fulehuk. And last, but not least, the very special Hollenderbåen lighthouse standing on Hollenderbåene in the middle of the fjord.
In 2012, Norway’s first underwater path for divers and snorkelers opened on the west side og Outer Hvaler National Park. “Lossen” lays six meters deep in the water and the path includes no interference to the seafloor since signs are created in stone slabs that lay on the seafloor.
