You'll get a wonderful and charming holiday at a reasonable price "hopping" from island til island in the Hvaler archipelago. This archipelago paradise is only two hours away by car from the capital Oslo. So close in distance, yet so distant and different in nature and environment. Welcome to your island hopping trip in the Hvaler archipelago.
Bring your family and friends to go island hopping, explore the islands and the Hvaler archipelago in a new and exciting way. Go from island to island with the cozy Hvaler ferries on an adventurous and relaxing round trip of the Hvaler islands. The ferries leave from the Skjærhalden port at Kirkøy every day of the year. Pack your rucksack or a basket with swimwear, blanket, towel, sneakers, one change of clothes, food and drink. That is all you need for an adventurous island hopping day in the archipelago. Bring your bike if you want to cover larger areas in a short time. You might as well bring your fishing rod, too. Or you can go emptyhanded and just stay on the ferry's sun deck as long as you wish. Many do.
Island hopping is often associated with ferry transport between islands, but this is not necessarily a correct definition of the term island hopping. Hvaler has no mainland and conists only of islands. However, the four islands Vesterøy, Spjærøy, Asmaløy and Kirkøy have roads and a connection to the mainland, and there are bridges between the islands. These four islands are well suited for island hopping and excursions by bike or on foot. These islands are large compared to the other Hvaler islands (see map below).
Key Figures About the Hvaler Archipelago
There are so many lovely islands in the Hvaler archipelago that it is unlikely that you will be able to visit them all in your lifetime. When spatial statistics is being used to describe the Hvaler islands, one number is repeated time and time again: 833 islands, islets and reefs. The source for this number is unknown. It is however completely wrong. Hvaler's area of 87 square kilometers consists of a total of 2,775 islands, islets and reefs. The smallest reef is 1.3 square meters and the largest island is 30 square kilometers. Hvaler's coastline is 691 kilometers long.
